Welcome to the American Friends of Herculaneum!

The American Friends of Herculaneum, the AFoH, is a society of individuals who are interested in the ancient culture, the volcanic catastrophe, and scientific rediscovery of Herculaneum. The AFoH was formally incorporated in 2011, an affiliate of the Friends of Herculaneum Society which was established in 2004 in the United Kingdom. Our common objectives are:

  • to advance the education of the public concerning Herculaneum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in particular to create an archive of materials relating to the World Heritage site at Herculaneum and the work of the Herculaneum Society
  • to promote research into Herculaneum, including the continued investigation of the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum, and the publication of the useful results of such research
  • to promote the conservation, for the benefit of the public, of the artefacts and buildings at Herculaneum.

We hope you'll join and learn with us.

Why join the American Friends of Herculaneum Society?

The American Society, just as its partner institution in the UK, promotes public awareness of issues surrounding Herculaneum, for the preservation and enjoyment of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. It directly supports students and scholars and all interested in things pertaining to Herculaneum, whether they are papyrologists, archaeologists, historians, or amateurs. All members benefit from stimulating twice-yearly meetings, and every other year we have arranged a trip to the Bay of Naples area in which Friends have access to artefacts, international scholars, and archaeological sites such as no other Society can offer. Friends receive hard copies of the Newsletter, and exclusive online access to the latest issue. They receive discounts from merchants including Oxford University Press, Wiley-Blackwell and Walter De Gruyter. All donations and membership subscriptions can be tax deductible.
